1. You don’t have to tuck in your polo shirt. This is a mistake that freshmen always seem to make. There is nothing wrong with tucking your shirt in. However, you don’t have to worry about the rules at the school that you came from. High school means new beginnings, and new beginnings are letting shirts flutter in the wind.

2. Do your homework the day you get it. Seriously. You’re going to have to do it anyway, so why wait until the next day, once you’ve likely forgotten the material that you learned. A block schedule is probably new to most of you, but don’t let it give you any reason to procrastinate.

3. Be the first one to the cafeteria so you can beat the crowd. Self explanatory. Get to the cafeteria in the first five to 7 minutes of lunch, and you probably won’t have to wait in any line at all. Get there even a few minutes later, and expect to deal with a massive crowd. It’s well worth the rush, and it’ll save you a lot of time.

4. Ask your teachers questions. The only stupid question is the one that you don’t ask. Of course that rule has some flexibility, but you really should ask your teachers questions. It helps you participate in class, as well as getting to know your teachers. You will learn more efficiently in a class in which you are familiar with how the teacher teaches.

5. Go to sporting events to support your school and meet people. Football games are the big ones at Mater Dei. It is important to support your sports teams, especially at home games. That being said, sports events are also fun social occasions that could very well lead to a few new friends. It is your first chance to see most of your classmates in a more natural environment, and you won’t have to worry about your classes for the night.

6. Don’t forget your uniform on mass days. Don’t be that guy/girl that forgets all the time. It’s a pointless detention to get. Just remember that if a 5-7 day falls on a Wednesday, you almost certainly have mass.

7. Check Haiku every day. It is important to constantly be seeing your grades. If you watch your progress closely, it will encourage you to want to keep your grades up. Check frequently so that you’re always up to date with whatever is being posted by your teachers.

8. Sync your watch to the school’s bells. You will never be late to a class again. If you synchronize your watch to the school’s bells, you will always know exactly how much time you have to get to class, down to the second. This will save you from unnecessary running, and it will make you run if you have to. Knowing exactly how much time you have is the trick to being on time and prepared.

9. Take challenging classes; they’re more rewarding than you think. You don’t want to be a senior wishing that you had taken tougher classes in your earlier years. Get ahead of the game and take challenging classes now. Your education is important, so make sure you are always presenting yourself with new challenges. They will prepare you for college and keep you nice and sharp.

10. Be yourself. You’ll regret it later if you try to change who you are. This shouldn’t take much explaining. Don’t change who you are just because you want to “fit in.” Freshman year is when most people choose their friends for the long haul, so don’t try too hard, just be you.
