Mater Dei’s Dance Club is off to a great start! Starting the year by performing routines for the Homecoming rally and the Homecoming game, the team is being lead by Mater Dei alum, Ms. Ericka Brunner. “I arrived at Mater Dei on Club Day and I was thinking not a lot of girls were going to show up,” Ms. Brunner said. “but luckily many girls did sign up, even more than I expected! That’s when I started getting more excited!”

As a dance teacher, Ms. Brunner pushes her students very hard. From stretching and getting flexible, to getting the right counts to the music and the dance routine, Ms. Brunner is very strict yet teaches modesty at the same time during her dance lessons.
This year’s Dance Club is like never before at Mater Dei, because the team will be going to competition and competing with other dancers. Ms. Brunner is helping her students get ready for that, however, for right now she wants the dancers to just have fun. She is trying to have all her students be sharp and become more flexible, not only in skills like the splits, but also in new dancing moves that have not been taught at Mater Dei before.

Ms. Brunner became the club’s advisor because she has been in dance since she was 5 years old. “So far I love the dance club! All the girls have positive attitude and they are very anxious to learn new things. Every time I add something new to the choreography they get super excited. Seeing those reactions inspires me to keep going and create new pieces.”
The way Ms. Brunner teaches dance, helps out many of the students in movements that that many of them have never done. She is very passionate about her dancing and she wants her students to be passionate when they dance too. No matter what, she will always be there to help even if her dancers they have never danced before. Her goal, she says, is to try to make this year the best one for Mater Dei student dancers.
