Hard work, sweat, commitment, drive, discipline, self-confidence, determination, and good sportsmanship is what athletes exhibit here at Mater Dei Catholic High School. Fall sports coming to end means that winter sports begin.

For some students it’s their last time stepping out onto the field, court, or even mat especially for those in fall sports. Football, girls’ volleyball, boys’ water polo, cross country, girls’ golf, and girls’ tennis say goodbye to the sport they most adore for either the last time or just for a while.

All seniors saying goodbye all have similar emotions about ending their high school career. Football player Nick Dell’Acqua, senior said “I’m shocked that it came and went so fast. I’m just glad that I got to finish my high school career with my bros, while playing the sport that I love.” Samara Gurrola, tennis player, senior also said “I feel sad about the season ending, because after four years of playing for this team, this is definitely the thing I’m going to miss about high school.”

It’s hard to imagine saying goodbye to something you’re so passionate about but what feels so much better is moving onto playoffs. “It’s sad that my season is coming to an end because it really is my last high school season but at least we made it to playoffs!” Paige Houston, senior, girls’ volleyball captain said.

Giving one hundred percent, and working hard to win is when great rewards come. Dionisio Saucedo, senior only joined boys’ water polo junior year and is now wishing he joined freshman year. Water polo has come out victorious with his fellow teammates these past two years. “Last year we won mesa league champions, we got to the quarter finals in CIF, and we won our first tournament.” Saucedo said.

These students walk out with great memories, while there are those students ready to create some in upcoming winter sports.

Boys’ water polo has finished so now it’s time for girls’ water polo to show what they got. Nicole Conner is very excited it being her last year and she had to say, “It being my last year I’m going to attend all the practices as possible, have fun, pressure other people to do better, and try to win every game.”

From the pool to the field and gym court boys’ and girls’ soccer and basketball start as well.

“I feel excited about my last season on the varsity’s girls’ soccer team and as a team, were going to try to make Mater Dei history by acquiring a CIF title.” Kenna Gutierrez, senior said. Boys soccer player Andres Septien, senior had to say “I feel great about this new season because I feel that all around were a great team. I feel very comfortable playing with my friends and I’m excited to see what we can accomplish.”

Basketball players Samara Martinez and Dimitri Gianousopoulos, both seniors are both excited about their new season and can’t wait to be back on the court. “My team and I are looking to get another CIF title and win league” Martinez said. While Gianousopoulos wants to win a CIF title as well he also said, “I want to create a bond that will last for a lifetime.”

Mats are also rolled out because it’s time for wrestling! “With the last season coming up I feel excited, all the hard work I have put in these last four years are finally going to be put to the final test as I try to capture a state title” Uriel Beristain, senior said.

Congratulations to all fall athletes and good luck to winter sports.
