Natural products from marine cyanobacteria used to treat cancer, F-35’s benefits to the United States Military, and a creative new way to harness solar energy without solar cells. These are a just a few of the topics that were presented at the STEAM night a couple weeks ago.

On October 19, 2017 Dr. Till, the director of the Science Academy, organized the event to display the Academic Posters that the senior science academy students created to show their research from their internships.

Seniors involved in Science Academy participate in internships either the summer before junior year or the summer before senior year. After finishing these internships, they write essays about their experiences. Finally, they work on their posters explaining their work and a solution to the problem they were researching.

This STEAM night is a flagship night for the Academy of Science and the school as a whole. There were two extremely notable guest speakers such as Crusader alumnae Mary Casillas Salas the mayor of Chula Vista and Dr. Jair Lage de Siqueira-Neto from UCSD School of Pharmacy. MDCHS’ Academy of Science.

Senior Brandon Moore expressed his appreciation, “My internship allowed me to get hands-on experience with graduate level research techniques and methodology, and now not only do I have a better understanding of the scientific method and how to apply it, but I am also better prepared for my life science degree in undergrad.”

At the Science Academy Poster Night the students were able to display, talk about, and present their projects. Senior Emily Miranda stated, “The purpose of the STEAM night was to showcase the fact that our Science Academy students are actually going out into the field and gaining experience that could benefit us in our college life and future careers.”

Overall, the Science Academy STEAM night allows students to share what they possibly want to pursue in their lives while gaining experience at discussing their research.
